The Seattle Seafair Pirates Official Web Site - Pirate Kings of the Northwest since 1949 It's a high-humored heist by the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates. The salty troupe's shenanigans and formidable float, the Duck, have become synonymous with SEAFAIR revelry. The Pirates, originally members of the Washington State Press Club's Ale & Quail Society, banded together in 1949 to promote Seattle and Seafair while having fun and serving the community. Despite their bad-guy image, the Pirates make dozens of appearances annually to hospitals and nursing homes. During the height of Seattle's SEAFAIR Celebration, they appear at several events and parades each day. The 40+ Pirates are an elite troupe who carefully selects their members based on their ability to mix well with the public and for their unique musical or theatrical talents.

Roger Kelly

On behalf of all of the Seafair Pirates  it is with a very sad heart to hear of our beloved Rogers Passing. As with all tragedy's our first impression was not to accept reality and thought this simply was not possible .

For those of you that do not know, Roger accepted the Most honored position of Davy Jones LIII for Our 2005 -2006 season. Roger had such a pleasant way about him and left such an impression with all the Pirates. He even looked quit dashing in his pirate Garb. After illness befell him in Hawaii, the Pirates broke tradition and left the title of Davy Jones LIII open in hopes that he would serve the following year. The Davy duties were subsequently fulfilled by past Davy's.

We kept in regular contact with Roger and his recovery and spirit were a inspiration to all who had contact with him. He kept assuring us he would be ready for Seafair 2006-2007. He was nominated again  and Roger formally accepted his commission on this past Tues Jan 3 2006 at a general membership meeting of the Seafair Pirates to serve as Davy Jones LIII.

The title of Davy Jones LIII  has officially been Retired in honor of Roger and he will be formally known as "His Imperial Majesty Davy Jones LIII".
Kelly, Roger Van

Roger Van KELLY Born April 9, 1936 at Providence Hospital in Seattle, WA. Died suddenly and peacefully of an aortic aneurysm at Swedish Hospital on January 4, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Kelly. Roger was raised in Madison Park, where he attended McGilvra Elementary and Garfield High school. A basketball scholarship brought him to the University of Washington, where he became a lifelong member of Phi Gamma Delta. He graduated with a degree in business. A member of ROTC in college, he continued his service as a tank commander in the army. Flying helicopter missions in support of the 82nd airborne division became his passion. He went on to test pilot jet helicopters in Alaska. Roger finished service to his country as a major in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. On one flight he couldn't resist buzzing Husky Stadium during the Husky-Navy football game in a USMC helicopter. His professional life began with The Ford Motor Company; transitioned into the financial world with Smith Barney and Company, and he finally found his home with Kennedy Associates. Throughout his working years he was able to pursue his love of basketball by creating a "40 and over" league at the Washington Athletic Club, which he watched grow into a nationwide program for older players. He managed to play in the league into his early sixties. His civic contributions included Board Membership of the Salvation Army, Virginia Mason Hospital, Washington Athletic Club, and Seattle Tennis Club. He valued the friendships made as a member of The Bond Club, and The 101 Club. Seafair gave him the opportunity to combine his love and appreciation for his city, with his deep commitment to The Armed Forces. He was honored to serve as Chairman of the Board of Seafair in 2004. A pirate at heart, he looked forward to an honorary role as Davey Jones. A special place in his heart belongs to The Forgotten Children's Fund. Involved in fundraising throughout the year, he couldn't wait to don his Santa suit, and deliver joy and gifts to children in need at Christmas. Roger is survived by his loving wife Linda; his son Scott (Sharon) and their children Shawn and Robert; his daughter Kathleen (Karl) Krekow and their children Brooke, Paul, Sylvie and Nicholas; his daughter Laurie Kelly; his sister Colleen (William) Baker; and great nephew Daniel Mulhall. Words could never adequately express his devotion to his grandchildren and their love for him. "Semper Fi" "May the force be with you" A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., on Friday January 20th at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. There will be a Wake to follow at the Washington Athletic Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions on Roger Kelly's behalf can be made to: The Forgotten Children's Fund C/O Banner Bank 2827 Second Avenue Seattle, Washington 98121
